In the age of the selfie, why do some people feel compelled to engrave their name in natural features, spoiling it for all others who follow?
I’ve noticed an increase lately with people feeling the need to engrave their names in trees and rocks, and am not liking the trend at all. Why not just take a selfie and leave the natural feature you’ve come to see unscathed?
There used to be an old saying when visiting nature:
Take only photos, leave only footprints.
But now it seems that one idiot carves their name, then a bunch of other vandals, think its OK, to do it too. Well, I’m telling you, as someone who spends a great deal of time in natural areas, I’ve never felt the need to carve my name, I prefer to take nice photos and connect with nature, which I’m finding increasingly more difficult when “William, Barl, Huxley, KF, DMT and Joel” have chosen to deface the natural features I’ve come to experience. Carving your name is NOT OK. In the age of selfies and social media, why not, take a selfie and put it in Instagram with a geo tag? It would be a lot less offensive to all those who follow.
